Cosmology: Measuring Distances (Hertzsprung-Russell)

The distance to objects in our solar system can be measured by radar ranging. The distance to about a 100,000 of the nearest stars can be measured by triangulation. How do we reach out to measure distances to stars further away than our nearest neighbors?
